ACTEA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MAY 2010 MEETING SUMMARY

NEW ACTEA OFFICERS

The results of the election were shared. Doug Leavens, Director of CTE at
Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex BOCES is the new President
and Tony DiLucci, Director of CTE at Tompkins-Schuyler-Tioga BOCES is the
new Vice President. Congratulations!

CTECC

Program updates were completed in Carpentry, HVAC, Business Computer
Applications, Welder, Electrician, Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), Computer
Repair Technician, and Computer Systems Technology this year. We continue
to need review by business and industry representatives. Contact Cathy
Chamberlin at crchamb@aol.com to recommend individuals to assist in this
effort.

The Atlas component provides an easy way for teachers to use the curriculum
on a regular basis to improve instruction. This year 194 individuals have signed
up for the new CTECC/Atlas curriculum-writing feature. Billing for the 2010 –
2011 school year will be August 1, 2010.

    to be updated
  • Barbering licensing exam workshops completed
  • Luke Mahoney is working with SkillsUSA to develop a written and
    performance assessment for the Barbering programs.
  • Youth Worker Safety updates are completed, pilot program next on the agenda
  • Collaboration Days encouraged to continue regionally in the state

    are costume, make-up and hair, construction, electrical, sound, and stage.
    Schools may choose one or more components to align with curriculum.

Technology Education

  • All of the technology education curricular support publications are available
    for free as downloadable pdf files. The Web page where they can be found

  • The New York State STEM Collaborative is a group of professional
    associations that have come together to define the term STEM. If anyone
    wishes to learn more about this group they can contact Jan Stark at
    845-242-5799. Jan is also the current NYSTEA president.

Business Education

  • Advanced Placement Accounting Pilot to be held at Hofstra University on

  • Alice Training this summer throughout the State. See

SKILLS USA

Changes to the By-Laws for Skills USA result in stronger alignment between the
State organization and the National organization. The involvement of Business
and Industry is really a significant step forward.

LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITY

Connie Spohn attended the National Policy Seminar in Washington this past
March. Documents and links to other resources from the Seminar are posted on
this website under the NEWS link.

NYS COUNCIL OF EDUCATION ASSOCIATIONS

The mission statement, goals, and major initiatives of each organization,
including ACTEA, have been sent to the Commissioner.

APPR

APPR changes will go into effect July 2011. The three areas of change are:
Student growth tied to teacher evaluations using multiple measures, uniform
rating scale using Highly Effective, Effective, Developing and Ineffective and a plan
for teachers to receive data for multiple measurements in a timely fashion for
evaluation.

Leadership

ISSLC 2008 standards were adopted by SED as draft standards. 5 components
include developmental goal, performance goal, student growth, multiple measures
and professional growth. There are meetings scheduled to provide feedback.
